Beyond Land Use: Designing and Implementing a Soil-Based Approach in Urban Planning
Long regarded as a resource to be exploited, soils are now at the heart of environmental and spatial challenges. How can we better understand, preserve, restore and live on them? This conference explores the conditions for a land-use transition towards urban planning that takes ‘living soils’ into account.
How can soils and their ecological dynamics be integrated into the ways in which cities and regions are designed and transformed? Over two days, researchers and professionals from the fields of ecology, soil science, geography, sociology, architecture and urban planning will share their work and experiences regarding the conditions for land-use transition.
The conference addresses four key challenges: gaining a better understanding of and representing soils; preventing their conversion to artificial surfaces and limiting their degradation; repairing and restoring their functions; and managing and inhabiting soils. It also examines the necessary transformations not only in technical practices but also in economic, legal and governance models.
Organised by the Land Transition Chair, in partnership with the Gustave Eiffel University Foundation, ENSA Paris-Est and the École des Ingénieurs de la Ville de Paris (EIVP), this conference marks the culmination of a series of study days devoted to the relationship between soil sciences and disciplines concerned with spatial transformation.
